A favorite property that is no longer up and coming, but has
positioned itself right in the center of the map!!! Dark purple in color, the chocolate covered dark berry fruits on the nose continue to a decadent, rich and creamy mid-palate. The finish is velvety, rich, long and very well structured. Consultant Michel Roland has a touch!!!

Chateau Kirwan is located on the plateau of Cantenac with some of the finest gravelly soil in all of the Medoc. Kirwan is exquisitely elegant, well-structured, and typical of the very finest of the Margaux appellation. The vines are thinned out in order to encourage maximum concentration and ripeness in the grapes. These are handpicked and carefully sorted before being crushed. The wine is fermented in temperature controlled stainless-steel vats and then aged in oak barrels (35% of which are renewed each year) for 18 months. The finest wine is sold under the Chateau Kirwan label. Chateau Kirwan takes it name from the Irishman, Mark Kirwan, who owned the estate in the mid 18th century. The Schyler family has owned Kirwan since 1925. - Union des Grand Cru de Bordeaux

Mark’s Notes - Visiting Chateau Kirwan last year proved to be another difficult task. We were met in the gardens by Sohpia Rothschild Shyler. Both the Rothschilds and Shylers have been powerful banking families in Europe for centuries and it showed in her appearance and mannerisms as we were taken around the property. The attention to detail, crossing every T and dotting every I were obvious traits of this woman. The reason I point this out, is that Sophia and her husband have just recently taken over control of the estate and the improvements in its function and design are immediate. They have, over the last 5 years; replanted portions of the vineyard, redone the drainage and decreased yield and increased quality by their management of the vineyard. The results were wonderful wines we tasted at lunch from the 80’s and 90’s and then the last couple of vintages simply blew them away. The wines have always had a great reputation, well liked and collected by fastidious collectors who are looking for the best value/quality in a particular appellation. The new wines will bring Chateau Kirwan’s standing to a much higher level. This will be one of those wines that we take out when friends are over who know and love wine and are familiar with most of the quality properties in Bordeaux. We’ll open up a nice bottle of Kirwan and they’ll sniff, swirl and sip, then exclaim, “Where did you find this little gem? I’ve never heard of it! It’s wonderful, powerful, elegant, balanced and goes perfectly with this rib eye (also grilled perfectly I might add).” Needless to say, I think this will be a show stopper.
