This is another one of Mark’s gems. There are very few second properties owned by a 1st Growth, or a Super 2nd Pichon Lalande in this case; that I typically recommend, but this is simply awesome juice for the money. Rich, jammy and decadent; it offers just a slightly lower level of richness and complexity than does it’s parent property. It won’t last the 30-40years of a Pichon Lalande, but give you quite a close taste of a similar look and feel for a fraction of the price. We went big on this wine last year and bigger this year, still probably didn’t purchase enough. While on vacation last year, I went into a small wine shop (Package store for those from New England) and found a 1996 vintage Chateau Bernadotte that they had purchased on futures back in the day. Well, once the humidity went down below 90% and the real temperature was just right, I made my in-laws trade in their Mark-aritas for a quick taste over a back deck buffet of fresh steamed lobster and dead, juicy cow off the grill. Opened up the 1996 and everyone said, hmmmmm….smells like chocolate covered berries….and I said, “Uh-huh!!!!” with a rather large grin. The wine showed great acidic structure and the potential to age another 10-15 years. Classic tart berries on the finish and a wide range of blackberry flavors came out with a little “air time”. I purchased it at a steal, 20% off down to $33btl; and it was like drinking a top 3rd or mid-range second growth with 10 years of age on it. Spectacular.
This wine rocked in 2003 and was sold out in days. They only get better! This vintage is dark, and slight garnet on the edge for color. The aromatics have a red berry, brambleberry, slightly toastiness to them. Medium weight with a stony, spicy edge, the wine finishes with a long, fine balance
